Layers of the Earth
The Earth is made up of three layers which are the crust, core, and mantle. The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth and is directly under the sima. The movement of the mantle is the reason the plates of the Earth moves.
The crust is made up of basalt and granites which are light materials. The crust is the thinnest layer of the Earth. The crust is broken into many pieces called plates. The plates float on the soft, plastic mantle.
The core is the deepest layer. It is like a ball of hot metal. The core is made up of nickel and iron which are heavy materials. It has very high temperatures and very strong pressure. There is a lot of pressure in our Earth. The earth gets so hot that it can melt rocks. The earth is an amazing place!

As the plates in the earth’s crust move, they change landforms. Some of these changes take place over thousands of years. Other changes take place quickly. Volcanoes and earthquakes can quickly change the shape of land. If you ever see a volcano erupt, you will be able to see red stuff come out the top. That is hot lava. Hot lava bubbles and oozes, out of the volcano and flows down its sides. Volcanoes can be dangerous. Hot lava that flows from a volcano can burn people’s homes. Lava, ash, and rocks burst out from the volcano. In some countries, such as the U.S.A. and Japan, people are learning how to use heat from volcanoes to make electricity.

Heredity
Heredity means having similar traits in the gene pool as your parents or grand parents. Some of these genes might include: eye color, hair color, hair texture (thick, thin, curly, or straight), skin color, and body shape.
In order to have these traits, you will need two genes. One from your mother and one from your father. Depending on who these genes come from and who has a dominate gene you will get one of the two from from one of your parents.
There are two different types of genes: dominant and recessive. The two types interact and then traits form.
Heredity happens to everyone and everyone has different traits. Why don’t you and your friend try to make a list of your own traits? Compare them. How are they alike? How are they different? When you are done, you may find you and your friend aren’t as much alike as you thought you were!

You inherit many traits from your family. Geanes are passed on from your parents to you and they determine your traits. I will tell about my dad. I look like him when he was in high school. My nose, mouth, and eyes looked exactly like his. It was like looking at me in high school. You almost couldn’t tell us apart.
Only my uncle has dimples. Everyone else in my family does not. My uncle has huge dimples when he smiles, but I have one on my chin not on my cheeks.
The second thing I will talk about is my families widows peeks. I don’t have a widows peek, and my mom and dad don’t either. I think my uncle and my grandmother have one, but they would be the only ones in my family.
The last thing I will write about is my family’s earlobes. My mom and dad have unattached earlobes and so do I. My brothers also have some. No one in my family have earlobes attached to their head.
I have inherited many traits from my parents. My dimples, which neither of my parents have, but my uncle does. I think it’s weird to have traits from your family but it’s true.

You inherit many traits from your family. Genes are passed on from your parents to you and they determine your traits. Here are some traits that you inherit: eye color, hair color, hair texture, body figure, freckles, your ear lobes, and double jointed thumbs.
I have many freckles. Only one of my parents has freckles. My dad is the one. He has many, many freckles. Both of my parents have dark brown hair. Now I get this gene from my grandfather, it’s my mom’s dad. We both have sand blond hair. My eyes are a crystal blue color. Both of my parents have blue eyes, as do I.
Traits are passed on from parents to child. My parent’s have given my blue eyes and freckles, but my grandfather gave me sandy blond hair. What different traits did your parents or grandparents give you? Think about it.

You inherit many traits from your family. Genes are passed on from your parents to you and they determine your traits.
My mom and I can curl our tongues, but my dad and sister can’t. So that was passed from my mom to me. So I guess that’s something that my sister can’t do.
I’m double jointed in my thumbs. Only my papaw and I can do that. My sister can only do it with her pointer finger but I can’t. My mom and dad aren’t double jointed.
I think everybody in my family has disconnected earlobes. A few of my cousins have connected earlobes. My nanny’s mother had connected earlobes.
So many people in my family have different traits.

Today I learned about heredity. I found out that you
get your genes from your parents. I think my brother and I got some of the same
genes. We are twins. I think I inherited some things from my mom. Like me
and her like to stay outside. We both get bored a lot. My brother can sit down
with a stick and not be bored. I don't know if I inherited anything from my real
dad because he died 17 days before I was born. I saw a picture of my dad and we
have the same eyes. My grandma thinks we have the same ears, too.

Today in class we learned about heredity. It is pretty
much like inheritance. I got my eyes from my dad. I also act like my dad, but I
got my temper from my mom. It is pretty bad, but it's okay. I also got my shape
from my dad. I got my skin color from my mom. I've got a lot more genes from my
dad than from my mom.

Today in class I learned about heredity. Heredity is something you get from one
of your parents or someone in your family. My dad has brown hair. I have brown
hair. My mom has blue eyes. I have blue eyes. My mom is even short and now I am
short like her. Everyone says I look just like my dad. My sister looks like my
mom. My sister and I look alike, but we have different attitudes and we have
nothing in common with each other. She doesn't like anything that I like. I like
greenbeans and vegetables, but she doesn't. She is picky. My grandma
says we are totally different. My dad was mean when he was little and
my sister is just like that.

Today in class I learned about heredity. Heredity is the
characteristics you inherit from your parents. I have moles on my body.
I get those from my dad. I inherited the way I look from my mom. I
also inherited my eyesight from both of my parents. So, everyone has
something from their mom, dad, or other person in their family.

Moon
There are different phases of the moon. Moon phases are how the moon appears in the sky. The moon goes around the earth in 27 days, 7 hours, and 48 minutes. The moon appears because of the amount of illuminated part of the moon. Illuminated means light up. A full moon is a full circle. A half moon is like a half circle. A crescent moon is like an upside down smile. A new moon is when the moon is not visible. These are the phases of the moon.

The phases of the moon are caused by the positions of the earth, sun, and moon. A new moon is a phase of the moon when it is not visible from Earth. A full moon looks like an entire circle in the sky. A half moon looks like half a circle. Some call it a quarter moon. A crescent moon is part way between a half moon and a new moon.

The moon goes around the earth 27 days, 7 hours, and 43 minutes! How astonishing! Also, the faces of the moon are caused by the positions of the Earth, Sun, and Moon. The shape of the moon appears to change. This is because of different amounts of the illuminated part facing us.

Matter
Matter is anything that takes up space. There are three states of matter. The first state of matter is solid. A solid has a certain shape and volume of its own. The second state of matter is gas. It has no shape or volume of its own. It has a certain volume, but has no shape of its own. Now that you have learned about them, name them.

Matter is anything that takes up space. There are three states of matter which are solids, liquids, and gases. A solid has certain shapes and volume of its own. A liquid has certain volume, but no shape of its own. A liquid can change shape. A gas doesn’t have a shape or volume of its own. Air is made up of different kinds of gases. An atom is the smallest whole bit of each kind of matter. And these are the three states of matter.

Matter is anything that takes up space. Mass is the amount of material that an object takes up. Volume is the amount of space that matter takes up. Anything that has mass is made of matter. Mass measures the amount of material an object has in it. The state – or form- that matter has is an important property. Liquid, solid, and gas are three states of matter. You can tell if matter is a solid, liquid, or gas by what its shape and volume are like. A solid has a certain shape and volume of its own. A liquid has a certain volume but has no shape of its own. A gas does not have a shape or a volume of its own.
