November is filled with historical events causing Americans to pause and remember both people and events in history.   Included in these November events are:  Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Veterans Day is November 11 and is a time to remember those who have served our county,  The Story of Veterans Day from TeacherVision has fresh ideas for all grade levels.   VA Kids has three sites:  for grades k-5, grades 6-12, and a teacher resources site.  CNN Veterans Day provides a history to the origin of the day.

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy was on November 22, 1963.  Accounts of President Kennedy's life are found at The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the White House, John F. Kennedy Photo History, and lesson plans at Discovery School.

America Recycles Day  In this time of increasing energy demanded and greater need for energy conservation, take time to visit the following sites with your students. Step your efforts and take the pledge to recycle. There are many sites to teach students how to be better stewards of the earth. A favorite location  is Recycle City where students play games, read interactive books, and learn about recycling. Clean Sweep USA from Keep America Beautiful has comics for learning about waste management and litter.  Additional games and activities can be found at Trash to Treasure

Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November.  The founders of our country and the native American Indians help to shape many of our traditions.    Visit accounts of the first Thanksgiving at  First Thanksgiving, History of Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Information,  Life on Plymouth Plantation ( a web quest), and Thanksgiving Activities ( a collection of activities from Jefferson County Schools)

Learn about the Cherokee Indians at History of Cherokee.  Visit Native American Indians and for a special treat create one of the treats at Native Recipes.  Other online resources include Native American Fun Facts and Games, and Native American Lesson Plans
