November 4, 2006 Professional Development Best Practices

NOTE:  The following list contains numerous hours of optional in-service and professional development opportunities that have been planned to assist professional staff in meeting self-selected, SACS and license renewal (Bachelor degrees) requirements.  Please review those activities that will help meet your professional growth needs and plan to attend.  Post or file this in your work place so you can refer to it as needed.    Each event will be publicized again in a timely manner prior to the scheduled date.  Summer events registration is up to the teacher with the Workshop Sponsor. After school begins, August 1, 2005, teachers will need to pre-register for each event by calling to reserve your slot no later than the week before the event.  To pre-register, call Penny James @ Central Office during the workday @ 397-3194.  Give your name, phone number, and the workshop you plan to attend.

Location:  New Market Elementary School’s Library

In-Service Credit: 3 hrs each workshop (24 hours available this summer)

Topics: Literacy Related Topics, See list below for specific dates of sessions

Times: 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. some in afternoon, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

  • Monday, June 20th – 8:30-11:30  Holistic Writing:  The Scoop on Getting Higher Scores on the State Writing Assessment with Jeannette Mulholland (Grades 3-8:  limit of 40 participants)

  • Tuesday, June 21st – 10:00 – 11:30 – ADHD Seminar with Dr. Deborah Christiansen from Knoxville Pediatrics (All grade levels: limit of 40 participants) June 25 ~ Dyslexia:  What is it?  What to do about it.

  • Wednesday, June 22nd – 8:30 – 3:30 – Phonemic Awareness for Young Children Seminar presented by the Wright Group (Pre-K, Kindergarten and Pre-1st teachers only: strict limit of 30 participants) at New Market School. June 28 ~ (Afternoon) Working with Children with ADD / ADHD within the Classroom  

  • Friday, June 24th – 8:30 – 11:30 – Differentiated Instruction:  Opening Windows of Opportunity for All Students with Jeannette Mulholland, Ruth Pohlman and Nina Moore (Grades 2-5:  limit of 40 participants)

  • Monday, June 27th – 8:30 – 11:30 – A Framework for Understanding Poverty with Nina Moore (All grade levels:  limit of 40 participants)

  • Wednesday, June 29th – 8:30 – 11:30 – “Make It, Take It” for Language Arts materials with Ruth Pohlman and Nina Moore (All grade levels:  limit of 40 participants)

Other Options:

If you serve on a system level committee you can count hours outside your workday for self-selected in-service. Some committees that can earn credit:
 Textbook Adoption Committee
 Calendar Committee
 Curriculum Committee
 SIP Committees

In addition, Saturday & weekday evening workshops are sponsored from time to time by educational, health, and private agencies. Some of these are recurring from year to year. Watch for flyers or posting announcing these types of opportunities.
 Mossy Creek Literacy Council (3 workshops during the year, TBA)
 Knoxville News-Sentinel “Newspaper in the School” Workshop (usually summer month of June or July)
 Ft. Sanders Sports Injury & Conditioning Workshop (usually in the spring of each year)
 Rose Center, various art related workshops (Fall – Winter – Spring – watch for publicity of times)
 National Geographic Society (Usually on the UT campus, times TBA)
 Orthopedic Sports Clinics usually held in spring each year for coaches, PE, trainers, etc.
 Other SDE workshops will be publicized as announcements are received.
