2007 Updates

Mrs. Dobyns          Kindergarten

We have had a busy and fun month in Mrs. Dobyns' kindergarten class.  We have been on two field trips, one to the Jefferson County Farm Day where we learned about farm equipment and crops. We also saw and  petted several
farm animals.  On our second trip we traveled to Meyers  Pumpkin Patch where we took a hayride to the pumpkin patch, picked a  pumpkin and saw some beautiful countryside.  While in our classroom we have  been reading some interesting books about animal babies, oceans and fall.  We are learning lots and making great progress toward our goals.

Mrs. Morell         First Grade

Mrs. Morell's first graders are moving right along.  In reading, we are about to finish our first reading book.  Students have been learning many new vocabulary words.  Suffixes have also been introduced.  During math class students have been learning to count by 1's to 100, by 10's to 100 and backwards by 1's.  Students have been memorizing math doubles, plus 1's, and plus 0 math facts.  They have also learned how to write a number sentence for a story problem.  For science, students have
been studying about animal habitats.  In social studies students have been learning
about rules and government.

Mrs. Harrell         Speech

Speech has had a really busy nine weeks. We have some very interesting cases. Hopefully in the next few updates I can fill you in on some of them. Laurie is doing a great job stepping in and performing speech services. We currently serve 55 children in the pre-k through 5th grade with 5 pending speech services; and 34 children in the special needs preschool area. Now if we could just clone Laurie and
myself!

Miss Greene         Pre-Kindergarten

The Pre-kindergarten class has been learning to identify signs of the Fall season; from weather changes to special Fall holidays.  We have traveled around our school on a "Fall Walk" collecting signs of Fall. Some of the things we collected were pine cones, nuts, different color  leaves. During our walk we could feel the cooler temperatures and wind blowing in our hair. The pumpkin patch even came to Piedmont School for us!  We each got to choose a very special pumpkin that was just our size.  Fall is an exciting time!

Mrs. Smelcer         First Grade

We enjoyed our field trip to Food City, FSG Bank, the courthouse, Pizza Plus and the Field of Dreams.  We did a great job singing our two songs for the bank.  In reading, we are learning about cause and effect and making predictions.  In math, we are working with dimes, counting by 10's, counting even numbers to 20 and learning about liquid measurement. We are finishing up our 5 senses in Science.  We will be talking about our families in Social Studies.  Click here to check our our field trip pictures.  Want to see even more?   Click here!

Mrs. Russell        Library

I want to thank everyone who made this year's fall book fair a success: the students, parents, teachers, and even some grandparents!  The library raised about $1500 to buy new library books and materials.  I will have some new books available next week for children to check out and the rest of the new materials will arrive hopefully before Christmas!  Thank you to everyone!

Mrs. Barbee      Third Grade

We have had a busy October.  We are working hard to perfect our reading and writing skills.  In reading, we are focusing on several different comprehension skills as well as reading with fluency.  We enjoy using trade books to practice these skills.  We have worked on several different writing assignments as well.  After reading A Day's Work, we wrote new endings for this story.  The students did a really good job with this, and their endings were very interesting.  We just finished a fun writing assignment about our Halloween costumes.  We described our costumes without telling what we will be, and we are challenging others to use our descriptions to guess what we will be for Halloween.   We are studying water on the Earth and the water cycle in  science.  We enjoyed learning a song about the water cycle and drawing a  diagram of the water cycle.   In social studies, we are beginning to study the  northeastern U.S.  This is an interesting region.  We will begin talking about the first
settlements in this area, and we will go on to discuss what  the region is like today.
We are beginning to learn multiplication facts in math class.  We began with the 1s and 10s last week.  We are also brushing up on addition and subtraction facts.  We are learning to find the perimeter of a given shape and create a shape with a given perimeter.   We look forward to the Fall Carnival this Friday!

Mrs. Whitley      Second Grade

Report cards went out this month and Parent-Conferences were held.  All students are working so hard to do their best work and I am so proud of this group!  In math we are memorizing all our addition facts.  We practice each day and test once a week.  Our basal readers have such interesting stories for us.  Our latest focus is on teamwork and partnerships.  Our latest story was The Bremen Town Musicians.  We sing songs, read stories, and write about each story.  We had a guest reader, Chloe's grandmother, who read two Halloween stories.  Since we heard about a pumpkin, we followed up by making pumpkins which are displayed in the hall.  Come see our work.

Mr. Horner      Fifth Grade

Mr. Horner's class has finished up one nine weeks and we are gearing for our second one. I was really proud of the grades my class  made, but we can all strive to get better at whatever we do.  We are still working hard at preparing ourselves for the writing test and honing our  English skills at
the same time.  In Math, we are moving into quadilaterals  and fractions.  Science has us looking at plants and Social Studies has us  heading toward the Civil War.  We are all working hard and we are looking  forward to experiencing and learning many new and exciting things.

Mrs. West      Second Grade

Do you know what a noun is?  We can tell you that a noun is a person, place, animal, or thing.  Sometimes you can add a suffix to the end of a noun  (like suffix –s, -es, or   -y).  When a word has a -y on the end, you can change the y to i and add -es.  Baby becomes babies.  We played a game called Around the World that helped us practice our math facts.  We used doubles, doubles plus one, adding nine, and adding two facts.  Did you know that we can play a game called Sums of Ten with regular playing cards?  The ace becomes a one.  We put the cards in order from 1-9 and lay other cards on top of the numbers to make a sum of ten.  Groups of four
people can play this game.  Do you like to do laundry?  We talked about matching pairs in math just like matching socks when we help our mom with the laundry.  We love to cheer our word wall words.  Each week we get a new list of words that we see in our reading stories for the week.  We were lucky to get a new student this week.  She is a good reader and tries her best.  We are helping her to get to know how things run at Piedmont Elementary School. Check out our horizontal, vertical, and oblique lines.
