         Update

Mr. Horner     Fifth Grade

Mr. Horner's class is still working hard as we approach the holidays.  We have just started a new unit in reading and have been studying irregular verbs and linking verbs in English.  We are also continuing to write and become more organized and complete writers.  In math, we are looking at probability and mixed numbers.  We just wrapped up the Civil War in social studies and the water cycle has kept us occupied in science.  We are always striving to become better students and citizens as we try to have a good work ethic and attitude about learning.

Mrs. Hogsten     Kindergarten

Mrs. Amy's class has been working on getting back into a schedule since Mrs. Amy returned from maternity leave after Fall Break.  We are now getting comfortable with our routine and working hard.  We have learned several letters and popcorn words since the beginning of the school year.  We have been to the pumpkin patch, had a visit from the Dandridge Volunteer Fire Dept., went on a leaf hunt, and played and jumped in the leaves under Mrs. Amy's favorite fall tree at school.  We are looking forward to Thanksgiving break and eating lots of turkey.  It won't be too much longer before Christmas is here. My, how time flies when you're having FUN in kindergarten!

Mrs. Dobyns     Kindergarten

Mrs. Dobyns' class has enjoyed this fall season.  We waited a long time, but the students finally enjoyed watching the leaves change colors.  As a class we have been working hard to learn rhyming words.  The students are getting good at producing them.  The students are also taking beginning reader books home. They read these to an adult at night, then bring them back to school and read them again to an adult here.  It is amazing, the improvement I see as we read every night.  To celebrate Thanksgiving we studied the Indians and Pilgrims and talked about getting along and helping others.  Enjoy the picture.

Mrs. Smelcer    First Grade

We greatly enjoyed the karate demonstration from Michael and Tucker.  Great job, guys!  We are so excited to be reading more and more every day.   We can't wait to read our dinosaur story coming up soon.  We've been learning about author's purpose and sequence. In math, we are learning about pairs, subtracting 2 and dividing a square in half.  We enjoyed having a guest reader from Carson-Newman read to us about our state of Tennessee.  We learned many new facts and did a coloring sheet to go along with the book.  We enjoyed  having Miss Carrie here from Carson-Newman also.  She spent several days with us as a practicum student and we grew to really like her!

Mrs. French     Third Grade

The third grade classes performed a program for the Veterans on November 9, 2007. Our play was entitled "A Soldier's Heart". The play was written and directed by the third grade teachers: Mrs. French, Mrs. Oakes, Mrs. Barbee, and Mrs. Bentley. There were 52 veterans in attendance.  Mrs. French's class has been studying about our government in Social Studies. We have had fun learning about physical and chemical changes in Science.  Students love to set fire to things and to make things fizz and bubble. We are getting geared up to study about energy and forces. The students are looking forward to building a "Rocket Robot".

Ms. Greene     Pre-K

What a wonderful exploration the last month has been. We have been studying Eric Carle and all the wonderful stories and illustrations he has given us. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? was a primary focus as well as The Very Quiet Cricket. During this time we have also enjoyed many other Eric Carle stories. Even our art work shows how interested we are in his work. In the upcoming month, we will be taking a community helpers field trip to the post office and the library. It won't be long now, until winter is here and we indulge ourselves with all of the wonderful things to study during this time.

Mrs. Wiles    Second Grade

Wow!  Time is flying.  It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is around the corner.  We have been having so much fun and learning too!!  We have enjoyed watching the trees change and experiencing the cool weather that finally arrived.  We love our new reading stories and math is moving right along.  We have learned how to write the date using digits and how to measure with cups and measuring spoons.  In December, 2nd grade will be doing Christmas Around the World.  It is always interesting to find out the traditions of different countries.  We will be getting our suitcases packed and our passports ready for our trip around the world.  We have some really cool new playground equipment that the PTO purchased - new swings and a geodome for climbing.  It didn't take us very long to figure out that if the weather is cold, the metal bars will be cold too.  Gloves make a great CHristmas present.  Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Check back with us in 2008!

Mrs. Garner     Second Grade

What a wonderful year we are having!  We have been having so much fun!   We have had a leaf fight, made cookies, collected corn and won the challenge against third grade, collected shoe boxes filled with goodies for less fortunate children, learned about nutrition, tasted red and purple corn chips and a persimmon.  There is more fun to come as we prepare for Christmas Around the World.  We will experience many other cultures as we learn about the traditions during the Christmas season in Mexico, England, Italy and Germany.  We will make ornaments, taste foods, and sing songs from those countries.  During this time, we will continue to read our wonderful stories from our new reading series and do our math lessons.  Please practice math facts with us along with telling time to the half hour, counting by even and odd numbers, and counting money with pennies, dimes and nickels.  We must also know how to count forwards and backwards by ones, two, fives, and tens.  Christmas will be here before you know it.  We are going to be really good so Santa will visit.  Check in next month for an update on our class happenings.  Merry Christmas!

Mrs. Strange     Guidance

October's character word was RESPECT.  Concentration was spent on manners...specifically lunchroom, table manners...what to do and what not to do...using manners shows that we have respect for people...using manners helps us to have a more pleasant atmosphere while eating.  Respect was continued on into November...learning about self respect and ways to show self respect and always trying to remember the GOLDEN  RULE...TREAT OTHERS THE WAY YOU WANT OTHERS TO TREAT YOU!    The character word for December and January will be CARING!

Mrs. Whitley     Second Grade

Thanksgiving has passed and now we anticipate Christmas and all the activities that go with the holiday.  Our picture below shows the turkeys we made from paper bags.  There was popcorn in the bag that we enjoyed after we got home! Yum! Yum!  We are using real coins as we learn to count pennies, dimes, and nickels. They can be noisy but we have learned to put our hands in our laps when we need to.  Our stories in our new reading books are most interesting and we have learned many things by reading them as well as our leveled reader books that go with them.  Soon we will start Christmas Around the World and our class will visit Mexico first. Feliz Navidad.

Mrs. Doan     Kindergarten

Mrs. Doan's class has been very busy this fall.  We are  learning more letters, numbers, and words.  We can read 17 popcorn words!  We have learned to tell time to the hour.  Most of our class can count to 29.  Five students can already count to 100!  We learned about the first Thanksgiving.  One day we pretended to be Pilgrims and the next day we were Indians.  Check out our pictures.
