The site of the September 24, 1904 New Market train wreck is less
than two miles from New Market Elementary School, so all 307
students, teachers, and community guests traveled to the site of the
wreck. The train tracks have long since been moved from the
site, but a slight rise where the train bed was still exists.
Everyone gathered on this rise for the ceremony. At 10:18 A.M.
exactly 100 years after the tragic wreck occurred, the students of
New Market Elementary School honored the victims of the crash by
reading poetry written for the occasion and by reading aloud all 113
names of those killed and then placing a flower in honor of these
victims.
