Whale Following
Grade Level:  3rd-5th 
Overview:  Students track the migration of whales. 

Objectives 
In this lesson, students will: 
· Research the migration of whales on the Internet 
· Chart this migration 

Time Frame 
Three times weekly from early fall to spring 

Materials
1. Internet access 
2. Poster board 
3. World map 
4. Printer 

Procedure
1. Research background and migration of whales using search engines and “Whale Migration” as search topics.  
2. Email, mail, or phone a marine institution along the California coast (Scripps at the University of California near San Diego or Monterey Bay Aquarium).  Seek out bulletin boards on the web that have this topic listed. 
3. Students use poster board for charting the migration and the map to track the progress.  Images from the web can be downloaded and printed to include in the chart.
