Masterpiece Murals
Grade Level: 3rd-5th
Overview: Students will create a mural of a famous work of art
Objectives
In this lesson, students will:
· Research online information about the painting
· Graph a painting into 1 inch squares
· Work in a cooperative group to reassemble the painting
Time Frame
Two 1-hour sessions
Materials
1. Online museum
2. Printer
3. A small reprint of a work of art for each cooperative group
4. Large manila folder
5. Poster board
6. Glue
7. Camera
Procedure
1. Cooperative groups locate a reprint of a famous painting.
2. The group will download and make 2 prints a reproduction of a famous
painting
3. The group will graph one print into 1 inch squares, numbering each
in order on the back of each square. Then the squares will be cut
apart and placed in the manila folder. The remaining copy of the
print will be glued to the front of the envelope.
4. The envelopes will be redistributed and the squares will be reassembled
as a mural. The numbers on the back of the squares and the print
on the front of the envelope can also be used as a guide to assist in the
mural creation.
5. After the print has been reconstructed the pieces can be glued on
the poster board.
6. The finished murals can be displayed in the hallway art gallery
alongside their guide print.
