Overview: Students will create their own story based on
the title, “If I Lived When Dinosarus Roamed the Earth.”
Objectives
In this lesson, students will:
· Read a book based on prehistoric life
· Visit one of the web sites listed at this site to learn more
about prehistoric times and the life of dinosaurs
· Create their own personal account of their life when dinosaurs
roamed the earth.
· Follow the steps of the writing process to compose a final
copy of their story
· Illustrate the story
Time Frame
Two 1-hour sessions
Materials
1. Books on the topic of prehistoric life
2. Paper and Pencil, art supplies for illustration
Procedure
1. Introduce students to authors who write about prehistoric times
(Aliki and Bernard Most) and explore web sites on the subject.

TO LOOK FOR A DINOSAUR, By Bernard Most
Discuss the process paleontologists use to take fragments from the
past and form theories about prehistoric times. Access one of the
virtual Internet museums for more information.
2. Instruct students to write a story in which they are the main character
and the setting is prehistoric time. Students should be creative,
but true to the facts they have learned about this era. Ask them
to think about how they would participate in events that might involve
prehistoric creatures. Students should follow the basic steps in
the writing process.
3. Students next illustrate their finished story.
4. Completed stories can be typed on a word processor and printed to
be bound in a class collection.
