5 day (45min. lessons) activity
Objectives
In this lesson, students will:
Procedure
1. Discuss elements of word problems: Key Words, data, computation
clues, unnecessary information,
2. Use the 4 steps of problem solving (Explore, Plan, Solve,
Examine) to solve this problem:
Bobby went to the mall at 9:00 a.m. He spent 6 hours shopping
and bought $50 Pokemon. What time did he leave the mall?
4 Steps of Problem Solving
Explore: Look at information and decide what is being asked.
Take out unnecessary misleading information (junk).
Plan: Determine what computation is necessary to solve the problem.
Clue Words:
contrast, compare, difference, more, least, less-Subtract
altogether, in all, total-Add
product, totaling equal groups-Multiply
per measurement, quotient, dividend, divisor-Division
Solve: Student does actual computation (9 a.m. + 6 hours = 3:00
p.m)
Examine: Does your answer make sense? If students answered 15
ask: “Is there a 15 o’clock?”
3. Create a group story problem using Word, computer, and large screen
TV.
4. Divide class into groups of 3-4 and ask each group to write one
story problem. The story problem should have one unnecessary piece
of information. The groups will outline their story problem using
the 4 steps listed above.
5. Each group will type and save their story in Word.
6. The story problems will be exchanged with another class and solved
using the 4 step process.
