Overview

This lesson will provide practice in constructing expanded sentences from simple subjects and predicates.

Time Frame
one thirty-minute session

Objectives

In this lesson, students will:

Materials Microsoft® Word x
 
       Netscape Navigator

 

Procedure

The students will brainstorm a list of simple subjects and predicates. The teacher will prepare a chart with the following headings: describing words (adjectives), naming words (nouns and pronouns), action words (verbs), how, when and where words (adverbs). In groups, students will then complete the chart. The teacher will demonstrate the use of the thesaurus on the computer using tools, language, Thesaurus from the tool bar. The best ideas from each group will be added to the chart. Each group will construct a sentence using the chart to share orally with the class. Next, individual students will construct a super sentence and write it on paper. Sentences may be illustrated if time permits. In pairs, the students will search the designated web sites for examples of Super Sentences. They can copy and paste their findings on a Word document In addition, students can browse through basal reader or trade books to locate examples of Super Sentences.
