Jarnigan’s Journal

October 22, 1998

The countdown has started for John Glenn’ return to space. He will be the oldest astronaut to be in space. The countdown is 7 days, 3 hours, 24 minutes and 23 seconds as of 11:58 a.m. today. We found this information on the Internet on CNN under the Science-Technology Section.

Today in Science we planted seeds. We have been studying about plants and how they grow. We have learned about the parts of plants. We planted them in cups in potting soil Mrs. Jarnigan brought. We put them in styrofoam cups.We had to bring them in because the temperature is supposed to be 30 degrees tonight, possible frost.

Master Sergeant Mike Duncan from the Air Force Base in Knoxville and an Air Force Colonel from Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Georgia came to our class and Mrs. Treadway’s class today to talk to us about the flying. We learned that parachutes are orange in times of peace so that they can be seen better. In war times the parachutes are green so they can hide from the enemy. The speed of the newest fighter plane is classified information (the F-22). Recent studies have shown that girls can withstand more G’s than boys. A C-5 transport plane is as long as a 1 football field. 100 Volkswagons can fit in one. The wingspan of one is longer than the distance of the first flight by the Wright Brothers. The G-force pulls so strong that it could cause you to black-out. We learned that for every 1,000 ft. that you go up, the temperature drops 2 degrees. Flight suits are flame-resistant. What a great model we had!!! Mr. Bryant put on a flight suit as a demonstration for us.
