Gloria Houston

THE YEAR OF THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE

LITERATURE STUDY Created by the Sonoma Valley Unified School District in Sonoma Valley, Washington. http://152.30.12.86/Houston/Sonoma.html

Gloria Houston - Home Page http://152.30.12.86/Houston/GloriaHouston.html

THE WORLD OF
RUTHIE IN THE YEAR OF THE PERFECT
                              CHRISTMAS TREE

SUGGESTED AREAS OF INVESTIGATION:
One of the things that makes this story so authentic is Gloria's use of a regional dialect for speaking parts. This dialect reflects the 18th Century English spoken by residents of the Applachian Mountains until recent times. English settlers brought this dialect to these isolated mountain areas during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Steven Kellogg

Steven Kellogg is the author and illustrator of many children’s books.  One book that is read in second grade at Dandridge Elementary is The Mysterious Tadpole.  This is a delightful book about a boy and his pet.  The illustrations in this book are wonderful and the children always love the way the story ends because it is where another story begins.  For more information on this talented author look at this site on the web http://www.friend.ly.net/scoop/biographies/skellogg.html .  If you would like a lesson plan using a book from this author go to this site on the web http://pc.collegestation.isd.tenet.edu/kellogg.html
