Contraction Ball
Overview
Students will correctly spell contractions with appropriate use of apostrophes.
This game is an adaptation of baseball. Divide the class into two teams with a selected pitcher. Place a chair in each corner of the room to serve as home plate, first, second, and third bases.
The team at bat lines up at home plate. The pitcher asks the first batter to use Microsoft Word to correctly make and type a contraction for two given words. (Example:
do not, is not, will not, I had, etc.) A correct spelling is a hit, and the player moves to first base. An incorrect spelling is an out. The players move around bases as they would in baseball. When a team makes three outs, the opposing team lines up to take
its turn. The team with the highest number of runs at the end of the game wins.
