Procedure
1. Read the book, Brown Bear, Brown
Bear, by Bill Martin, Jr. to the class.
-
Introduce the students to a pre-prepared
version of the book created from Microsoft Word. This version will contain
the text of the book leaving room for the students to illustrate.
-
After students have completed their own
version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, brainstorm with the class a new
version of the book using the same color words but different objects. It
is helpful to use a large classroom monitor for the children to view the
words as they are written.
-
Make a class book using these pages with
the same color words and new objects.
-
As an extension activity, use some of
the repetitive language in the book to create a big book to introduce the
students to school personnel. An example would be: Mr. Nolen, Mr. Nolen
(principal) who do you see? I see Mr. Vick (assistant principal) looking
at me! Illustrations will include photographs of each person featured as
well as the children’s own representations of the individuals.
-
As an evaluation tool, have students read
their illustrated version of the book to the teacher. The students could
also match color words and colors on a flannel board.
