Overview
Learners will learn to create a book report.
Time Frame
5 day (45min. lessons) activity
Objectives
In this lesson, students will:
Day 1
Read aloud the book, Annie and the Old One, by Miska Miles and share related websites (see list at end of lesson)
Whole Group Activity
After listening to Annie and the Old One students will create a brown paper bag book report using an ordinary paper bag. Students will help select four items to place in the bag to represent significant events or characters from the book. Place these items on a table: rock, yarn, loom, spoon, feather, calendar, cup, and key. Discuss which items relate to the book. Put the items in a brown paper bag and discuss which item came first in the story. As students organize items and summarize events in the story type their ideas in MS Word projecting on a wide screen TV. Point out paragraph main ideas and detail sentences as you do so. After the story has been recounted, allow groups to read paragraph and share items with the class.
Day 2
Small Group Activity Students work in groups of 2-3 and select and read book. Together they make a list of what items they will bring for their brown paper bag.
Day 3
Distribute brown paper bags (variation: you could distribute the bags on Day 2 and place the book(s) for each group inside the bag, letting it be a surprise which book the group would be reporting on)
Students place items in bags and begin writing a rough draft for their book reports.
Day 4
As students complete their rough draft, they will type, save, and print these on MS Word. Students could also do web searches for sites related to their book or author.
