-(Morning Message) – Using a pocket chart, each word is written on an individual card. Students build a sentence. (incorporates days of the week, children’s names, and beginning sounds). - (Nursery Rhymes) - Match words - Art activities - Math activities - Sequencing - Science activities - (Word Families) - Chunking – student looks for word chunks instead of individual sounds; helps fluency. - (Spelling) - Make words using one letter per card. Substitute letters: map – nap - Recall & Retell: Velcro mitten glove (5 Little Monkeys) uses visual skills to help retell. Can also use Little Old Woman who swallowed the Fly. - Graphics from Time to Sleep. Retell story using pictures & words (wear pictures around neck and children can act out) - Alligator Game - Sight words First

Grade - I. Comprehension Strategy - “Everybody Read To” (worksheet – 4 Block) - “Agree or Disagree” (worksheet – 4 Block) - Comprehension Ball - KWL Chart - Discuss parts of a story - II. Cause and Effect - Students will role play actual events. For example, knock books to floor, add food coloring to water, etc. - III. Author’s Purpose - Share varied reading genres with students. Have class discussion about purpose of the author. - IV. Sequencing - Flow charts, following directions, assemble something with directions, follow a recipe. - V. Main Idea and Supporting Details - 4 square writing, good time to include science curriculum as reading lesson - VI. Teaching Elements of a Story - Characters - Setting - Theme - Simply make chart about these aspects of a story Fourth Grade - Student Strategies shared: Terry Sams developing power point presentations from every story in reading book - Language Arts – English/Reading every 6 weeks benchmark tests are given, plus Mountain language test once a month.
