Kindergarten Reading

-(Morning Message) – Using a pocket chart, each word is written on an individual card.  Students build a sentence. (incorporates days of the week, children’s names, and beginning sounds).

-        Chunking – student looks for word chunks instead of individual sounds; helps fluency.

-        Recall & Retell: Velcro mitten glove (5 Little Monkeys) uses visual skills to help retell.   Can also use Little Old Woman who swallowed the Fly.

-        Graphics from Time to Sleep.  Retell story using pictures & words (wear pictures around neck and children can act out)

- Plants – power point, label parts of plant, dissect a seed, germinate a seed, make life cycle of a plant, needs of plants experiment

Simple Machines – educational movie- find simple machines within school classroom, make a simple machine

-        Water Cycle – power point and write on activity, illustrate the water cycle, demonstrate condensation

-        Animals – life cycle of butterfly, frog, and chicken, five groups of animals, classification, adaptation, animal behavior

-        Weather – cloud types, use cotton balls to make clouds, types of weathering

-        Space – teach phases of the moon by observing sky in journal, make a model of the solar system

-        To use with all science concepts:  KWL charts, graphic organizer, cooperative learning, magazines

Fourth Grade Science

-        Textbooks are needed in Science!!  Across the county, some bought the new textbooks (Piedmont), some are using the old, some are using the older textbooks.  We should be consistent.

-        If you use power points, you can print them out to put in notebook for reference

-        Concerns:  grades – number grades or S/U

-        Goal Card – with 85 average in Science – would a student be eligible for “A” Honor Roll?
