Professional Development
The key to the success of any reading
initiative is professional development. Professional development
will be provided to both teachers and 6-12 administrators. Only if
school administrators are actively engaged and understand strategies
provided through professional development for teachers, will they
insure the implantation of these strategies in the classroom. We
will also offer professional develop training in reading in the
content area to our 4th and 5th grade teachers to begin to train our
students in reading strategies that will impact their performance in
middle and high school. The professional development will span the
three-years of this project in order to provide teachers an
opportunity to absorb and implement these new practices.
Year 1 Professional
Development - Fluency and Comprehension
- Read 180- 2 days of training
for 5 teachers and special education teachers
- Grades 6-12 – Language Arts
teachers, special education teachers, school administrators, and
reading teachers during the summer (two days- full day sessions)
- CTE & JCHS teachers -The
reading coordinator will provide two ½ day sessions
morning/afternoon
- ThinkLink teacher training
(one day)
Year 2 Professional
Development - Reading in the Content Area
- Grades 6-8 content area
teachers, summer training, special education teachers, two
half day sessions for 79 teachers and 8 principals
- Grades 9-12 content area
teachers and special education teachers, summer training,
two half day sessions for 62 teachers, and 5 principals
- 4th and 5th reading in the
content area –two ½ day sessions (We have included 4th and
5th grade in this component as independent reading in the
content area begins at that grade level.)
- Orchard training – one day
for 16 teachers
- Training for any
newly hired language arts teachers (Fluency & Comprehension)
two ½ day sessions & ThinkLink (one day)
Year 3
Professional Development - Writing & Vocabulary
- Grades 6-12 - Four
square writing training, one day
- Writers Workshop
providing process writing training which is consistent
with the 4 Block framework in the lower grades
- Training for any newly
hired teachers (Fluency & Comprehension, Reading in the
Content Area) Four ½ day sessions for each topic &
ThinkLink (1 day)

Project LEAD if funded through a
partnership with the
Niswonger Foundation.
The Partnership Program provides schools with the resources and
expertise they need to become successful. By helping schools develop and maintain
strong academic programs, the Foundation seeks to enhance the
educational opportunities of all children.
Under the direction of Linda Irwin, each partnership project is
tailored to the particular school and community in which it is
located.
