Struggling
Reading Intervention Program
Each 6-12 school will incorporate a reading intervention teacher,
who will focus on struggling readers in an inclusive classroom
setting. The struggling reader intervention program will be
individualized, intensive, and on-going.
Through
Read 180, students will be provided instruction in phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The
program includes computer technology, daily independent reading,
writing, and leveled readers. At each school, the
Read 180
intervention program will be composed of three inclusion classes
with a total of 60 regular and special education students
participating. The reading intervention teacher will be assisted by
special education staff during the 90 minute
Read 180 class.
Screening with the Sanford Diagnostic Reading test has indicated a
need for one
Read 180 intervention class offered at each of our
middle schools (4 programs and 4 reading teachers needed) and one
class offered at the high school for grade 9 (one program and one
teacher needed). In the second year of this project, we will
continue to build the
Read 180 library through additional leveled
readers.
The reading classrooms will be equipped with
Promethean Boards,
which will provide an interactive visual response through Activote
pads,
which will engage learners and provide monitoring of progress.
Learning Well reading games will offer students additional
enrichment opportunities.
