Challenging Individuals to Achieve Excellence

Literacy Education for Adolescent Development
Our first progress report indicates an average growth of 71.8 SRI (Lexile) points by students participating in Project LEAD.  LEAD serves over 230 students in grades 6-9.

Project LEAD (Literacy Education for Adolescent Development) provides an organized intervention program for struggling adolescent readers in Jefferson County. The project incorporates trained reading teachers and an infusion of inclusive professional development over a 3-year period.

We Believe:

  • Reading and writing are the foundation of academic success.
  • Students have a right to learn through reading.
  • All students have the capability and need to be literate citizens.
  • It is the responsibility of all staff to ensure literacy for all students.

Project LEAD if funded through a partnership with the Niswonger Foundation.  The Partnership Program provides schools with the resources and expertise they need to become successful. By helping schools develop and maintain strong academic programs, the Foundation seeks to enhance the educational opportunities of all children.

Under the direction of Linda Irwin, each partnership project is tailored to the particular school and community in which it is located.
