Total Solar Eclipse 2017

August 11, 2017

On August 21st, 2017, Jefferson County families will have the opportunity to witness a once-in-a-lifetime event: a total eclipse of the sun. It will be the first total eclipse in the United States in 38 years and will not occur again for 99 years. Jefferson County Schools encourages everyone who takes part in viewing the eclipse to do so safely. Jefferson County Schools will close all schools on August 21 to ensure the safety of all students.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and sun. But not all areas will see a total eclipse. Jefferson County residents will see about 97% of the sun covered. To see the totality, or the full blocking of the sun, you will need to travel west towards Oak Ridge, Crossville, and Crossville. You can also travel southeast to Greenville, South Carolina to view the eclipse.

The eclipse will begin at approximately 1:05 PM. The sun will be completely blocked by the moon sometime near 2:40 PM. The eclipse will end around 4 PM. The totality will last for about 2 minutes before the move begins to move away from the sun.

Safety is extremely important during an eclipse. Regular and polarized sunglasses will not protect your eyes from the damage caused by the sun. Use only glasses specifically designed to for viewing the eclipse. Many of Jefferson County's schools have purchased eclipse glasses for the students. You may also purchase the glasses from Walmart and other local vendors. Check the glasses you purchase to ensure they meet the standard ISO 12312-2. The standard should be printed somewhere on the glasses. Safety glasses should be worn at all times before, during, and after the total eclipse. It is never safe to view the sun directly without protection.
