Dispute Resolution Process

 

Homeless Children are those who:

 Lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.  This includes anyone who, due to a lack of housing, lives:

  • In a shelter
  • In inadequate housing: no electricity or running water
  • In a motel or hotel
  • In a car, park, campground, or abandoned building
  • Doubled up with other people due to economic hardship 

 

Eligible students have the right to:

  • Enroll in school,  even if neccessary documents to enroll are lacking
  • Enroll and attend class while the school gathers needed documents
  • Receive transportation to and from the school or origin, if requested
  • Enroll in the local school; or continue attending the school of origin (the school last enrolled in, and attended when permanently housed) if that is your preference. If the school district that you select is not in the best interest of the student, the district must provide you with a written explanation of its position and inform you our your right to appeal the decision.   • Receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students

Services offered:

  • Aid in enrollment in school and record transfer
  • Provide essential school supplies
  • Assist with available community resources
  • Inform you of community events such as Christmas in Jefferson Count, Coats for the Cold, etc.
  • Help with school issues or concerns
